This six-week course introduces teachers to a variety of educational software applications to enhance their knowledge and skills in instructional technology so they become more proficient in their use and integration of technology in the classroom and workplace. Such applications as MS Office (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), blogging, Inspiration, Kidspiration, bookmarking, the creation of rubrics, Web 2.0 applications, and podcasting are presented in this course. In addition, participants are asked to create a technology-infused lesson plan utilizing several new technology applications to facilitate student learning and motivation.


The majority of the subject matter is delivered through engaging self-paced lessons combined with collaboration, feedback, and interaction with the instructor. Students will experience recorded class presentations with audio, online readings, activities and explorations, as well as discussions and feedback on assignments from Dr. McKenzie. This course takes approximately 45 hours of work to complete.
Course Competencies

The student will:

  1. Enhance knowledge of MS Office and other selected software applications to use in the classroom (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Inspiration, Kidspiration, bookmarking, blogging,),
  2. Improve his/her technology skills in MS Office and other selected software applications that can be used in the classroom (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint),
  3. Identify technology integration strategies that are useful in the classroom to enhance student learning and motivation (e.g., social networking, blogging, hands-on learning experiences, e-mail, continuous assessment, podcasting),
  4. Create instructional materials for use in the workplace to facilitate student learning (e.g., PowerPoint presentations, technology-infused lesson plan, rubric, Inspiration project, electronic bookmarks),
  5. Examine classroom management strategies utilizing the computer (e.g., technology-infused lesson plan),
  6. Develop a technology-infused lesson plan to provide more hands-on learning for students within the classroom, and
  7. State important copyright policies and procedures that should be followed in the schools.
